Winter gardens don’t have to be dull and boring as there are many ways to keep your garden looking beautiful. To inspire the residents of Lonehill to maintain their gardens throughout the winter months and to reward them for their efforts, the Lonehill Residents Association (LRA), in conjunction with Just Letting and Fourways Garden Pavilion, are holding a winter garden competition.

R10 000 in prize money is up for grabs and each entrant will receive a hamper worth over R300. A portion of the R120 entry fee is going to a charity nominated by Gardens of the Golden City.

“So many gardeners hibernate during the winter months and miss out on the really rewarding winter season,” says Greg Chamberlin of Fourways Garden Pavilion. “What we want to do is to encourage residents to really experiment with the wonderful options available. Winter annuals are just as rewarding as summer ones. Consider the P’s: pansies, primulas, primroses and sweet peas. Or there are numerous winter bulbs such as daffodils, ranunculi and the brilliant indigenous freesias, ixia and sparaxis. All of these are wonderful, rewarding plants!” says Greg.

“A garden competition seemed a natural way to have fun and reward the residents for their contribution to our stunning suburb,” says Sally Pearson, board member of the Lonehill Residents Association.

Just Letting’s Nicci Roussos says: “We are delighted to be involved. Letting homes is our specialty and the efforts of the LRA and the residents in Lonehill make our job so much easier as there is a wonderful village feel to the community. Those coming to the suburb for the first time are blown away by what they experience. Lonehill will definitely continue to be one of the suburbs of choice in the Northern Suburbs.”
