Brassica Oleracea

11KAL-5496Ornamental cabbage

Brassica or ornamental cabbages make for wonderful garden specimens during cooler winter months.

These fantastic splashes of colour can be used as bedding plants, edging plants and make statements in containers. Being part of the cabbage family they are edible too and add zest and colour to stirfrys and salads. Yet another attribute for Brassica is that they make interesting cut flower specimens. As they age they form a tough thick stem under the flower head, these are easily picked and last long in arrangements.

Ornamental cabbages need to be planted in full sun and in a well drained soil. They enjoy organic – rich soils and need about a 20 -30 cm spacing between plants. They can become as wide as dinner plates forming dense rosette like flower heads on ground level.

Use ornamental cabbage for sea side gardening as they are salt spray tolerant.

Brassica are also able to with stand very cold conditions and frosts which makes them ideal for winter gardens.

Brassica Kamome White and Red has fringed typed leave with all the leaves finely ruffled. They have a white and red centre respectively and this is framed by green outer leaves. Colours become stronger with cooler night temperatures Brassica Songbird White and Red is a slightly more compact variety with the leaves being more scalloped than and not as frilly as the Kamome Brassica. Songbird

White and Red have white and red/pink centres respectively and are they surrounded by green leaves. Colours also become stronger with cooler night temperatures

Ornamental cabbages are easy to grow and provide excellent winter colour.
