Open Elgin Gardens – Fresh Woods – Western Cape

The gardens range from large, established country gardens to young, recently planted gardens in villages and on smallholdings, all in a setting of great natural beauty an hour’s drive from Cape Town.

This is a rambling, romantic plantsman’s garden with a major collection of heritage and species roses and many rare trees and shrubs including rhododendrons (especially maddenias), serrata and wild hydrangeas, deutzias and over 70 Japanese maples. There are also collections of cyclamens, epimediums and lilies, and a lovely woodland garden under pine. The bamboo walk is another highlight. This garden won the WFRS Award of Garden Excellence 2003, and has been featured in Remarkable Gardens of SA (2012); Gardens to Inspire (2013), Veld, Vlei & Rose Gardens (2011) and Old Roses: Survival & Revival in SA (2015).
