Open Gardens 2018 – A Real Gem – Western Cape
October 20, 2018 @ 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
Hoekwil is a scenic hamlet characterised by large gardens. The tranquil lifestyle is reflected in the splendour of the rural village, which is situated just outside Wilderness. The gardens, both in town and on farms, have a wonderful variety of plant material, some of which is unique to the area. All gardens have stunning mountain, lake and/or sea vistas, and viewing the gardens is best done at a leisurely pace as there is so much to see. This will be Hoekwil’s fifth Open Gardens. From humble beginnings six years ago, this event has developed into a successful annual fun weekend. Due to adverse weather conditions in 2017 – fire, drought and wind – Open Gardens were cancelled.
Two local nurseries are involved and some gardens will be selling plants. Refreshments are available at the coffee shops in Hoekwil and at one of the gardens. Local artists will also be on show.
Ice and Edelweiss Easton, Ararat Farm
The Eastons, with the help of their talented gardener, have created a real gem of a garden, opening on uninterrupted lake views. Indigenous plants dominate, especially in the natural garden that is divided into several interesting rooms with plant from the Karoo and Suurveld, and shade- and sun-loving plants. Structural plants give a formal feel while the rose garden with pansies, lavender and other herbs adds romance. This is a must-see garden!
