Open Gardens 2018 – Beechwood Garden, Gauteng
October 11, 2018 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pmR50
Christopher and Susan Greig, 25 Christopherson Road, Hyde Park
This is surely one of the most classical landscaped gardens in Johannesburg. Laid out in 1945 by legendary landscape architect, Joanne Pym, and redesigned by the current owners, Christopher and Susan Greig, this 3.5-acre garden surrounds a magnificent old-world house, designed by Steffen Ahrends, and features a colossal water oak that is believed to be one of the largest trees in Johannesburg. The garden features a forest setting with pathways leading to an English-styled garden where several ponds provide the perfect example of water-garden planting. You will be surprised by two sections in this garden; one is the rose-covered colonnade and formal rose garden. The other is the sunken kitchen garden, which is possibly one of the best examples of a suburban vegetable garden. The garden has gained heritage status and is definitely worth a visit.
Susan will again present her much-anticipated alfresco luncheon on Saturday and Sunday. Booking is essential on belinda@ charlesgreig.co.za. Shari Dickinson will once again hold her artisanal market over the four-day period.
