Open Gardens 2018 – Copperleigh Farm – KZN
November 3, 2018 @ 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
David and Alvera Crookes, Beverley 2047 Portion 10, Dargle
Copperleigh Farm Garden is made up of four separate gardens: the main farm garden, the vegetable garden, Copperleigh Arboretum and Copperleigh Trout Cottage garden. The main garden has Inhlosane Mountain as a backdrop, and Mavela Dam in the front, which is not fenced. It is a mature garden with large trees and shrubs, mainly perennials, and a new walkway through old, established shrubs that should be a riot of colour with annuals such as primulas, foxgloves and Bellis perennis. The vegetable garden is very productive year-round and should be filled to capacity with fresh produce. Next to the vegetable garden is a chicken and bunny run for children to see. Copperleigh Arboretum is newly established and has indigenous shrubs and trees with a couple of wooden bridges and cut pathways for guests to walk through. The pathways lead to the top of a ridge, which looks out onto the nearby Inhlosane Mountain. Copperleigh Trout Cottage has a little stream running along the edge of the garden, and has arum lilies, agapanthus, salvias, azaleas, and daylilies, which should all be flowering, as well as Leucosidea sericea (ouhout in Afrikaans) growing along the banks. It also has access to Mavela Dam and features a wooden jetty leading into the dam.
Directions: From the N3 highway near the town of Howick, take the Howick/Tweedie exit and turn left to head away from Howick towards Lions River (R107). At the T-Junction (R103) turn right. Continue straight, drive through the small town of Lions River, head over the bridge that crosses the Lions River, then look for the Dargle/Impendle (P134) road on the left hand side and turn left. If you see Piggly Wiggly shopping area you’ve gone too far. Continue on the Dargle/Impendle road (P134) for about 20km. Eventually it will turn into a gravel road (P130). Continue for another 7km. Look out for the Boston/Everglades turn off, then turn left onto that road (P132). Travel another 500m and look for the ‘Copperleigh Trout Cottage’ signboard on your left and turn in there. Continue down the driveway.
