Open Gardens 2018 – Dwalhoek – KZN
October 26, 2018 @ 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
Ashley and Struan Stanford
This is a small farm garden of approximately ½ ha, surrounding a ‘modern’ old Victorian house. The house stood empty for many years and was once used to store Graeme’s maize crop! Peta Stanford designed the original layout of the garden with simple lines and garden rooms. For the last four years Ashley and Struan have simplified the plant palette to an unfussy green, white and grey garden. This is not a traditional garden – it is made up of manicured hedges, garden rooms and there is a lot of structure to the garden, yet it is still free flowing enough for two energetic little boys. Struan and Ashley have a passion for their vegetable gardening and have a large organic potager that provides a constant supply of fresh vegetables throughout the year, with the hope to be fully sustainable from the vegetable garden in the next two years. The garden is still evolving and improving with the recent establishment of a berry orchard, fruit tree orchard and a revamp of an old derelict dairy into Struan’s horse stables.
