Open Gardens 2018 – Eva’s Field, KZN
October 27, 2018 @ 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
James and Sue Bentley, 8A, D534, off Hilton College Road
This 14-year-old garden was started from scratch and designed and planted, and now maintained, by the owner, and is situated in an area of natural grassland. The garden enjoys magnificent views into Umgeni Valley and across to the Drakensberg. Planting consists mainly of colourful summer perennials that have been chosen to withstand the rigours of wind and heat experienced as a result of living right on the valley edge. The evolution of the garden has been by trial and error, having to deal with extreme climatic conditions, plus grazing of plant material in the winter months by visiting nyala and reedbuck, and devastation of many plants by termites, which prevents the owner from planting roses. There is still plenty of colour from summer-flowering perennials and bulbs like salvias, rudbeckia, echinacea and dahlias. Large, steep banks are covered with indigenous and exotic groundcovers and shrubs. The valley below the garden is filled with Acacia sieberiana trees and naturally occurring candelabra aloes. Bring sturdy walking shoes if you wish to explore beyond the garden. This garden is a summer garden and is at its best late in the year.
Directions: Take the N3 Hilton off ramp and drive towards Hilton College School. Just before the school, turn left into the D534. Drive for 2km then turn left after the dam. We are the second gate on the right-hand side, where you see the airfield.
