Open Gardens 2018 – Footpaths through the Forest- Western Cape

October 20, 2018 @ 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

Hoekwil is a scenic hamlet characterised by large gardens. The tranquil lifestyle is reflected in the splendour of the rural village, which is situated just outside Wilderness. The gardens, both in town and on farms, have a wonderful variety of plant material, some of which is unique to the area. All gardens have stunning mountain, lake and/or sea vistas, and viewing the gardens is best done at a leisurely pace as there is so much to see. This will be Hoekwil’s fifth Open Gardens. From humble beginnings six years ago, this event has developed into a successful annual fun weekend. Due to adverse weather conditions in 2017 – fire, drought and wind – Open Gardens were cancelled.

Two local nurseries are involved and some gardens will be selling plants. Refreshments are available at the coffee shops in Hoekwil and at one of the gardens. Local artists will also be on show.

Terry and Jenny Lamont-Smith, Vasewold, 2 Blompot Street

This large 10-year-old garden is a medley of mostly indigenous trees, plants and shrubs with a beautiful mix of texture. Thousands of indigenous trees were planted 15 years ago and today they stand tall as a natural forest. It is a colourful, informal, rural retreat with pathways winding through forest, an olive labyrinth and bonsai garden. The natural swimming pond adds drama.
