Open Gardens 2018 – Waterford Hall, KZN
October 6, 2018 @ 9:00 am - 11:00 am
Eileen Stuart, Karkloof
From a tiny bungalow with a narrow veranda, located on a steep slope, Eileen Stuart and landscaper Mike Hammersley have transformed the space into an outstanding garden. The garden has a dreamlike quality with plants jostling for attention. The first task was to terrace the slope and install a dual stairway on either side of a baroque-inspired fountain. The bold leaves of gunnera add drama to the striking entrance. Roses hold pride of place along with other old-fashioned perennials. David Austin and other roses abound and perfume the air, alongside deutzias, irises, heliotrope, agapanthus, buddleia and lilies in shades of blue, maroon, purple and pink. A new development leads from the Chinese pavilion to the rear of the house and a columned patio looks over the orchard and dams, a walkway leads one up the steps through a white garden crowned with a domed gazebo where jasmine, clematis and roses hold court. The overall picture is one of exuberance of plants, trees (cherry trees in the spring; acers in the autumn), of statues and the collective perfume of contented flowers. The beautiful, the unusual and usual come together as a flight of fancy, a dream to inspire the senses.
Directions: Take the Howick North/Tweedie offramp, turn right at the T-junction and travel into Howick. At the fourth traffic light turn left, taking the Karkloof Road. Travel past both the Amber Valley and Amber Ridge entrances. After passing a large dam on your left, take the next road to the left; it is marked ‘Waterford Hall’ (opposite La Petite France).
