Open Midlands Gardens – St. Andrew’s Retreat – KZN
October 27, 2018 @ 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
Paul and Jennifer Hindle, Hidcote, Giants Castle Road
The informal gardens are set around the magnificent sandstone St. Andrew’s church that dates back to 1901. The garden features old oaks, espalier plum trees, crab apples and deodars, plus other trees rescued from the basin of the new Spring Grove dam. Giant hedges are used to keep the garden looking good throughout the year. The hedge theme carries through to the herb-vegetable garden, and hardy perennials provide the mainstay of the beds in informal plantings that echo an English country garden. Guests are invited to pack a picnic and come and picnic on the lawns. The church will be open for guests to enjoy in bad weather or to use the bathrooms. On Saturday, Music Voyage (music for previously disadvantaged children from the community) will come and play their marimbas and saxophones, and the brass band from Bruntville and choir will entertain guests as they picnic.
Directions: Heading north on the N3, go past Mooi River, take the Hidcote off ramp, turn left and continue until you reach a T-Junction. Turn left – St. Andrew’s Retreat is 100m further on the right.
Why visit: The ever-present sense of rural space and peace. The ankle-high spiralling labyrinth, shady trellised areas, reflective water features and views across farmlands to the Drakensberg and the sandstone church.
