Water Parsnip/Tandpyn Wortel (Berule erecta)

Water Parsnip is a vigorous, indigenous aquatic herb of the carrot family (Apiaceae) – other family members include, Cumin, Caraway and Fennel – noted for its medicinal use in relieving toothache among traditional healers. Water Parsnip’s beautiful bright green, sword fern-like foliage forms the perfect foil for other grassy textured water plants and for showing off their delicate umbels of white Queen Anne’s Lace-like flowers that make their appearance through late summer. Best grown in full sun to part shade in moist soil or shallow water no more than 20 cm deep. Evergreen in frost-free gardens, but will resprout from the roots if heavily frosted. Benefits from occasional cutting-back to tidy up clumps and control excessive spread.
