Amaryllis on Water

What’s more fun and fascinating, and as easy as pie than growing a simple bulb on water? Show your kids that you don’t need a garden to grow some bulbs.

What you’ll need:

  1. Amaryllis bulb
  2. Hydroponic vase / carafe
  3. Water

Bulbs rely on the food reserves they store up before going into dormancy. The bulbs you buy in the shops are therefore ready to produce perfect blooms as soon as temperatures are right and the correct light and water are available.

Step 1

Make sure your vase / carafe is clean. Get the kids to rinse them out properly.

Step 2

Place the bulb in a glass carafe with a neck that snugly hugs the bulb.

Step 3

Fill the carafe with water until about a centimeter below the bottom end of the bulb so that it never touches the water. If the bulb gets soggy it will rot!

Refill the water whenever the level drops.

Step 4

Be sure to keep the bulb in its optimum position with its base just on the surface of the water – nature will do the rest.

Step 5

The kids should keep their vases indoors in a bright cheery spot, away from direct sunlight.

They will be amazed as the miracle of life unfolds … slim, firm leaves, a sturdy stalk, unparalleled flowers and all the mysteries of the underground activity revealed in the vase.
