Power Flowers

What’s not to love about Lobelia? It is a hassle free and exceptionally rewarding little plant. If it is power flowers you are after then Lobelia is the ticket. Although not considered to be a primary crop it is an essential companion to any bed, basket or container, the final touch to any display and helps to complete the overall look.

Torenia, also known as the wishbone flower, are cheerful, brightly coloured little characters that add much needed colour to those semi-shaded areas in the garden. Their blooms seem to be pulling a tongue, giving these delicate little plants a cheeky and impossible to ignore personality.

56566919 - many blue flowers as a background lobelia.

Lush Lobelia

With Lobelia’s trailing habit, it makes a particularly good filler for hanging baskets and pots. In flower beds it creates a beautiful, soft edging. Planted en masse, Lobelia makes a striking statement. Although the colours are predominantly blue – purple, midnight blue, mid-blue, sky blue – you will also find rose, lilac, pink and white in the palette. Some are solid colours but most have a little white eye and in the darker colours it is wonderfully contrasting. The foliage colour ranges from a dark bronze to bright green, depending on the variety.

Lobelia should be planted in full morning sun as they appreciate a little afternoon shade. They prefer soil that is rich in organic matter so it is important that you add compost to the soil before planting. Keep the soil moist but not sodden.

Taunting Torenia

Torenia are native to South East Asia and offer an abundance of blooms all through summer and into autumn, until the first frosts hit. They grow quickly so pinch off the new shoots early on to encourage it to bush out into a sturdier plant. They will need protection from any strong winds and for optimum results they enjoy being topped up with some plant food every two weeks.

March in the Garden

It’s planting season! Time to get new plants into the ground to establish before winter and also the ideal time to move and replant trees and perennials. Get to your local GCA garden centre for more inspiration, ideas and expert advice. Read below and find out how to PLANT SMART.

Value shopping

Look out for 4-pack or small pot perennials in your local nursery. Not only will they save you money but they’ll also fill large areas faster with year-long colour.

Herewith some of the trusted plants you will find this month:

Penstemon – these are the stalwarts of autumn. They are drought resistant and great for quick colour.
*Salvias – many varieties with aromatic foliage and tubular flowers that attract birds and insects. Salvias grow in a wide range of growing and soil conditions and cope with dry periods.
*Angelonias – for a colourful display in flower beds and in pots. They are excellent as cut flowers. Grow angelonias in rich, well drained soils in a warm, sunny or semi-shaded position.
Gazanias – flower all year round in protected gardens. Plant in full sun in soil on the sandy side, with good drainage. Good for coastal gardens and their roots bind the soil so are excellent on slopes.

A large variety of attractive, flowering succulents are also available at your local nursery.

*For frost free areas during this period*

Planning for autumn plantingLIAG_web_image_March_2017_v1_08
Fill your boot with compost, compost & more compost! Apply to each and every planting bed as nutritious mulch. Prepare soil by digging it over to the depth of a large spade, while working in copious amounts of compost and include bonemeal to promote strong root growth.

Start sowing sweet peas
It is sweet pea sowing time – prepare deep trenches for them by digging in compost from your local GCA garden centre and generous dustings of bonemeal or superphosphate (do not use bonemeal if you have dogs).

Water Wise Tip of the Month from Leslie Hoy

"Use your grass clippings as a 2cm deep mulch in the garden.

Spread it loosely over the soil and don't dig it in."

unnamed

This month with Water Wise - Brought to you by Rand Water and Water Wise

The hottest year on record

2016 has officially been declared the hottest year on record by two leading US science agencies, with average land temperatures warmer than the previous year, and eight successive months that were individually the warmest since records began in 1880.

This data has further confirmed the theory of climate change in the minds of many and should encourage people to make a concerted effort to reduce their impact on the environment and its precious natural resources.

South African weather further indicate the possibility of continued drought conditions across most of the country despite wetter conditions in the early part of summer. It is anticipated that recovery from drought will be slow and caution should be shown when using our limited water resources. Remember to be Water Wise this summer!

Water Wise Events - February 2017unnamed (1)

Flufftail Festival 2017

BirdLife South Africa is pleased to announce that the third annual Flufftail Festival will take place at Maponya Mall in Soweto from 31 January - 6 February 2017. Although recent rains have somewhat alleviated drought conditions over parts of our country, as South Africans we cannot afford to be complacent about water. With the threat of global warming looming ever larger, it is still important to raise awareness about our most critical natural resource, and its importance not only to ourselves, but also to the birds and other wildlife that depend on it for their survival.

Brunfelsia Pauciflora (Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow)

brunfelsia

Yesterday Today and Tomorrow is endemic to Brazil. It is a semi-deciduous shrub that can grow over 2m tall and 1.5m wide. It has sweet fragrant smelling flowers that bloom purple and then lavender and then white. YTT is tolerant to short periods of cold but would advise protection from severe frost. YTT is often used as a container plant on patios.

Indoor Plant of the Month for February: Mini ‘Love palm’

love-palmFebruary is the month of ‘LOVE’. With Valentine’s Day dominating the agenda, stores are filled with red roses, chocolates, red hot chillies and a wide range of novelty items. In amongst all of these you are likely to find Chamadorea elegans, more commonly known as ‘The Love palm’.

‘Love palms’ are small, slow growing palm trees, reaching a full mature height of approximately 1 metre. ‘Love palms’ are renown for their attractive foliage, compact shape and decorative cluster form. They are widely adaptable indoor plants – thriving in low to moderate light locations throughout the home and office.

Unlike the typical Valentine’s Day colour options, Love palms will survive and last for several years! They offer an unusual, more sombre and ‘safe’ Valentine’s Day gesture that is ideal for friends, teachers and work colleagues.

Love palms may be small in size, but they are pretty tough and hardy indoor plants, that are relatively easy to grow. To ensure success, position in a well-lit area, away from direct sunlight and breezes. The biggest threat to their successful growth is overwatering and ‘wet feet’ – if leaves turn yellow, halve the watering frequency (esp. in winter). Liquid fertilisers enhance and promote plant health. Standing the plant in a shallow bath of water for a few hours (or overnight) will ensure the soil medium does not completely dry out and this practice is recommended for plants that have been neglected, on a monthly basis.

Over the past few decades, several indoor plants have been proven to improve indoor air quality by filtering toxic compounds from the air. Chamadorea elegans is amongst the top 10 ‘air purifying’ indoor plants and has the ability to remove benzene, formaldehyde and trichloroethylene. What does this all this mean??? Quite simply Love palms contribute to a healthier work and home environment – scientifically and also aesthetically.

Strawberry Fields

strawberries211To enjoy sweet strawberries in spring and early summer, start preparing now.

There are 2 ways to grow strawberries:

  1. From healthy runners, removed from growing established plants
  2. Planting new strawberry plants obtainable from your favourite GCA garden centre

Strawberry plants are usually sold individually and are ideal for planting into vegetable or edible gardens. They also make excellent container plants!

‘Strawberry Pots’ are large urn-shaped pots that contain several openings for plants. This is traditionally an excellent way to grow (& harvest) many strawberries from a relatively small area. Alternatively, strawberries are planted in rows in the vegetable garden or can be interspersed throughout edible gardens.

Strawberry plants have a trailing growth habit. They are successfully grown in hanging baskets and the ‘runners’ they produce will ensure your harvest is extended for many additional weeks.

Success with strawberries:

Strawberries should be grown in full sun positions, in healthy soil enriched with compost and phosphates (super-phosphates or bonemeal). Strawberries require moderate watering, so when planting into rows it’s beneficial to mound the plants between furrows which will retain moisture. If you are planting into containers located in full sun positions, we highly recommend incorporating water holding granules to reduce the required watering frequency.

Plant into holes that are twice the size of the plant bag and ensure the planting depth is maintained. Water thoroughly after planting and feed weekly for the first month until the plants are settled.

Growing Tip: Strawberries do not like ‘wet feet’.

Harvest Tip: Ripe strawberries are soon spotted by birds, bugs (& hungry children!). The fruits ripen relatively quickly and it’s worthwhile to scan your harvest daily to ensure you get there first ☺!

Aftercare

Protect against snails and slugs with organic snail bait. As soon as flowering starts they can be given a dose of 3:1:5 SR fertiliser.

Creepy Crawly Caterpillar Seed Planter

A project for even the smallest of hands - this caterpillar seed planter requires minimal effort or expertise and is sure to create lots of fun in the garden. You will need just a small amount of goodies to get this project started and the kids will love the final result.

Place your friendly-looking caterpillar somewhere in the garden or on the verandah and watch as the seeds start to sprout through, creating a ‘hairy’ effect. Make sure to water your furry little friend every couple of days so he can grow beautifully.

Let’s get crawling with the activity …

What you will need to get started:rdp_4034

  • A pair of old pantyhose (any colour will do)
  • Scissors
  • Potting mix
  • An old bowl/tub
  • Small spade
  • Wheatgrass seed mix
  • 5 or 6 x pipe cleaners in different colours
  • Plastic eyes
  • Glue (fabric glue will work best)

Steps of the activity:

  • Pour some potting mix into a bowl (enough to fill the panytyhose once the sections have been tied off with the pipe cleaners).
  • Using the small spade, mix the seeds into the soil.
  • Holding open the pantyhose, spoon the mix into the pantyhose, leaving enough space to tie it on the other end.
  • Leave the open end untied and then divide the caterpillar into little sections (all similar in size).
  • Tie a different coloured pipe cleaner around each little section and at the last section, make a knot and cut the extra fabric off the end to make a small nose.
  • Create the antenna by pushing a pipe cleaner through one side of the pantyhose, guiding it through slightly and then out the other side - then bend the pipe cleaners into the shape you want.
  • Place a little bit of glue on each of the eyes and stick these onto the caterpillar’s face above the nose.

Plectranthus ‘Mona Lavender’

pmlt1

Family: Lamiaceae

Common names: spur flower, Mona Lavender (Eng.); muishondblaar (Afr.)

Plectranthus ‘Mona Lavender’ is a hybrid developed at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens that is becoming a hit around the world!
There are many Plectranthus species that are used as ornamental herbaceous plants for the garden, not only in South Africa, but all around the world. Most of these come from the more subtropical/tropical areas of southern Africa. They come in a number of shapes and colour forms ranging from white, through pink to dark mauves and lavenders. Being so easy to propagate from cuttings, they are readily shared amongst keen gardeners and are one of the few plants that grow well in shade.

Description
‘Mona Lavender’ is a quick-growing, herbaceous, perennial shrub reaching up to 0.75 m in height, forming a lovely, rounded, dense bush.
It has dark green, glossy leaves with intensely purple undersides and sprays of lavender flowers dashed with purple markings.
It flowers very unpredictably, but does well in shortened daylight, which starts in autumn, but depending on how old the plant is and how much it has been pinched back, flowering can be extended right into early summer.
Derivation of name and historical facts

‘Mona Lavender’ was bred by one of the horticulturists at Kirstenbosch, Roger Jaques, in the late 1990s. It was a fairly long process involving much hand pollination and raising many thousands of seedlings, back crossing and raising many more thousands of seedlings – each time selecting out the best, most attractive individuals to go through to the next round of breeding. But the efforts seem to have paid off as now we have a magnificent plant that is sure to be a popular garden plant all around the world.

Growing Plectranthus ‘Mona Lavender’
Growing ‘Mona Lavender’ is a pleasure for any gardener as it is relatively adaptable and trouble free.

Capsicum annuum ‘Black Pearl’

screen-shot-2017-01-18-at-13-41-17

This ornamental pepper is an award winner with its glossy, dark foliage and black fruit.

Capsicum annuum ‘Black Pearl’ peppers should be planted in moist, rich, well drained soil. To achieve this, add well decomposed compost and fertiliser to your soil when planting. These vigorous, upright plants can reach a height of 45cm and can grow just as wide. To encourage bushiness, pinch out the growing tips while the plant is still young.

The Capsicum annuum ‘Black pearl’ pepper has leaves that start off as green and then turn into dramatic deep purple-black as they get older. To encourage even darker leaves, grow your black pearl in the sun. Semi-shade conditions will not hamper their growth but will encourage slightly greener leaves. Black Pearl can even be grown indoors in a warm spot with bright light.

Although Black pearl peppers are heat and high humidity tolerant they still require regular watering especially when it is dry and hot in the summer months.

Small bright purple flowers appear from early summer and black pearl-like peppers will appear after these flowers have dropped. As these small, round peppers mature the plant truly starts to show off its ornamental value as the fruit changes from black to contrasting cherry red. This fruit, although highly ornamental, is edible but not for the faint hearted. The fruit is said to be extremely hot so caution should be taken when handling the plants and the fruit.

With its contrasting foliage and fruit Capsicum ‘Black Pearl’ is a sizzling contender for use in gardens. It will provide a stunning contrast to silver and white foliage plants in beds, is very well suited to containers and of course for those that dare, provide a serious zing to food dishes.

Salvia Heatwave series

copy-of-salvia-heatwave-blaze

The Salvia HEATWAVE series was introduced as a direct response to the current hot and dry climate that faces many SOUTH AFRICA gardeners. Salvias have a great reputation as a water wise family that thrive in sunshine and dry, open soils. This series is a compact range, in comparison to many other Salvias that have a tendency to spread and become leggy. The tighter foliage of the HEATWAVE series allows them to feature more prominently in the garden, providing colour right throughout the warmer months. The evergreen, aromatic foliage is also a welcome addition to any garden, providing colour for a very long period from spring right through to autumn in most climates.
