Crown of Thorns (Euphorbia milii)

This shrub has prickly stems and bright green leaves. Bright red bracts surround tiny flowers which are produced throughout the year meaning that you will always have a splash of colour in your garden. This shrub forms beautiful contrasts against other shrubs in the garden.

“Crown of Thorns’ makes for an excellent barrier plant and is pretty when planted en-masse.

Euphorbia requires full sun, is hardy and drought tolerant. They work well in low maintenance areas or in pots that aren’t frequently watered, making it a great water wise plant. It takes kindly to clipping or cutting back. Great for picking for the vase!

This excellent little shrub is a must for all gardens.

Water Restrictions Lifted in Jozi!

February 2017

After two years of severe drought and water restrictions, the Minister of Water and Sanitation, Nomvula Mokonyane, announced on Monday that the water restrictions in Johannesburg have been lifted. The announcement followed rains in Gauteng, which have filled dams across the province.

According to the South African Government News Agency, all but two dams (Molatedi and Groot Marico) in the North West have filled up, with these two expected to fill up shortly, due to further heavy rains. Most dam levels in KZN have almost reached capacity due to consistent rainfall in the province, and the Western Cape is still on level 3b restrictions

The lifting of restrictions somes as a welcome relief to the whole country, particularly farmers and nursery owners who have faced tough restrictions over the last few months.

“On behalf of the South African nursery industry we are delighted that the dams are full, and that the thousands of people employed in the industry can survive once again, always keeping in mind that water is a precious resource and needs to be used responsibly with sustainability in mind” Tanya Visser, President of the South African Nursery Association.

Gardeners across the country have already started changing their habits to conserve water, by using grey water, water tanks and any other ways. The nursery industry promotes responsible water usage always and not just during water restrictions, with the motto “save water, regardless”.

“I must thank the people of Gauteng for their efforts in helping us save water by adhering to the restrictions and for using water wisely and responsibly in the last three to four months,” Mokonyane.

“However, the restrictions in the province may be reviewed later when winter rains begin to fall in the region. Water restrictions in other provinces would remain in place and would be reviewed on a case-by-case basis together with the affected municipalities and if need be, they too will be advised to lift the ban,” Mokonyane said.

Water Wise Tip of the Month from Leslie Hoy

"To check for leaks in your home, first turn off all your taps and take a water meter reading. Wait for at least one hour with all the taps off. Take a second meter reading. If the meter reading has changed, you most likely have a leak that needs to be repaired.”

This month with Water Wise - Brought to you by Rand Water and Water Wise

March is a busy month!

March is often regarded worldwide as ‘water month’, especially as World Water Day (WWD) falls on 22 March every year. World Water Day highlights the importance of freshwater and the sustainable management of freshwater resources. It was first celebrated on 22 March 1993. The theme for World Water Day 2017 is ‘Wastewater’. WWD will encourage people to reduce and reuse their wastewater instead of wasting. The Department of Water and Sanitation will celebrate National Water Week from 13 to 19 March 2017. Water Wise will be busy at all Rand Water sites during the month of March and will be creating awareness of our Earth’s most precious natural resource and how to manage it sustainably and effectively. In specific, Water Wise will be encouraging employees to fix leaks at home and in the office. Also in March is Earth Hour: don’t forget to switch of all your lights for one hour on 25 March to celebrate this campaign.

Remember, always be Water Wise!

Water Wise Events - March 2017

  • The National Water Week awareness campaign reminds us all of the value of water and the role it plays in eradicating poverty in South Africa.

Portulaca Rio Grande

This incredibly hardy flat growing ground cover provides vivid colour in a garden throughout summer. Look out for Orange, scarlet, white and yellow colours in nurseries this season.

It is free flowering and vigorous and just thrives in summer heat ……. just right for South Africa’s hot dry conditions and our need for water wise plants.

Ensure it is planted in well drained soil in the full sun. Be especially aware of over watering as the plants will easily rot in soggy conditions.

Use them at the front of garden beds, in containers or hanging baskets. They work great as a border edging and will be super colour in rock gardens where they will fit in well with other water wise plants.

Healthy Herb for March – Celery

Green Celery Vegetable

Celery (Apium graveolens)

Is it a herb or a vegetable? Whichever way you view it, celery has been grown for its nutritional and medicinal properties for at least 3000 years. All you need is a row of plants, or some in containers, to have a constant supply of crunchy green stems for salads, juicing or adding to stir-fries, slow cooked stews and soups.

Growing

The secret of good celery is to produce ‘soft’ stems, which are more edible, with a milder taste and crunchier, yet juicy texture. If celery stems are tough and thin it could be the variety but is more likely to be the result of insufficient water, lack of food or too much sun.

Celery grows best in morning sun, in moist, fertile soil that has been well composted. It can also be grown in containers in well-enriched potting soil.

Water regularly and mulch; the soil should not dry out, especially in containers. Fertilise twice a month (or weekly at half strength) with a nitrogen rich liquid feed.

Seed sowing tips

Sow seed into trays and cover until plants germinate, within 10 to 20 days. When seedlings show three true leaves, transplant into individual pots or directly into beds. This severs the tap root which encourages the development of a better root system. Set plants out a little deeper than they were in the seedling tray, but don’t cover the growing point.

Companion planting

Grow celery with other edible plants that have the same water, light and nutrition requirements, such as cabbage, beans, leeks, lettuce, spring onions, spinach and tomatoes. Celery improves the health and flavour of cabbages, in particular, and repels white cabbage butterfly.

Harvesting celery

The easiest way to eat celery is to harvest the outer stems when you feel they are thick enough to eat.

Pink Polka Dot Plant and Balcony Gardening

Screen Shot 2017-02-15 at 13.07.24Balcony gardening combines the best of both worlds!

The vivid colours of shade-loving outdoor plants add brilliant bright colour to patios, balconies and atriums. Apartments, townhouses and smaller homes may often not include a traditional garden – but almost all homes have a sunny windowsill, balcony or alcove.

Balcony gardening takes many shapes and forms. Your personal taste will dictate whether you opt for functional edibles (ie. herbs and veggies) or brightly coloured flowering plants.

If you are new to balcony gardening, it’s a good idea to start small. Observe the light conditions you have to work with – most balconies have either morning or afternoon sun but there are often areas that have full sun or full shade. Choose plants accordingly.

Hypoestes phyllostachya (more commonly known as the “polka dot plant”) is a versatile, small balcony plant well suited to ½ sun positions. Polka dot plants are colourful, delicate indoor plants, grown for their decorative foliage. The polka dot plant is an ideal ‘filler’ plant and is particularly useful in mixed plantings. The soft, intricate blotched markings on the small leaves come in 3 different colour shades of red, pink or white.

Mixed planting refers to planting a selection of different plants in one container ie. a windowsill, feature planter or large bowl. Typically the plant mix combines flowering (seasonal) plants and perennial foliage plants to ensure a consistently full effect. Polka dot plants offers a long-lasting foliage option that also includes colour.

Polka dot plants thrive in bright light conditions. More direct sunlight will produce brighter colour foliage and if the light is too low, the leaves become mostly green and start stretching. One of the many benefits of balcony (and container) plants is that you can move the container around to find the best position.

The more sun, the more water is required.

Rhagodia Hastata

IMG-20170223-WA0002

This hardy coastal plant is also known as the Salt Bush. If left to grow, it can reach up to 2m in height and spread prolifically. Rhagodia is fire retardant and an excellent weed suppressor for those wilder areas of your garden.

Although it can be a prolific grower, it also lends itself to more formal applications. It can be shaped into balls and makes an excellent hedging plant, tall or clipped short. The silver grey foliage makes a statement from afar, not to be overlooked when planning a drought resistant garden.
