Sunny Flower Garden

Get the kids inspired to garden for fun with this colourful garden activity that is sure to brighten up your life, in more ways than one!

What you'll need:

  • A patch of garden
  • Shovel and rake
  • Selection of sun loving plants that haven’t flowered yet
  • Compost
  • Mulch (optional)
  • Trowel
  • Watering can

Step 1

Pop into your nearest accredited garden centre and pick up a selection of small sun loving annuals. Preferably ones that haven’t flowered yet.
By “planting green” you’ll encourage a stronger root system for the plant, ensuring a healthy development.

Step 2

Choose a spot in your garden that gets approximately six or more hours of sun a day.
Prepare the soil by pulling the weeds and digging up the soil until it crumbles.

Step 3

Spread a layer of compost over the area and let the kids get their hands dirty by mixing it into the soil.

Step 4

Place your plants on the bed and arrange them with the tallest ones towards the back.

Be sure to give the young plants plenty of room to grow. Check the instructions on each of your plants to find out exactly how far apart to plant them.

Step 5

Once you are happy with the positions of the plants, use your trowel to dig a hole for each plant.

Step 6

Turn the pot over, and tap the plant into your hand. Loosen the root ball with your fingers, and place the roots into the soil.
Press down firmly around the base of the plant.

Step 7

Water your plants every few days and soon your sunny flower garden will be in full bloom.

Extra tip:

Pick your flowers often to keep the plants blooming.
