A Cup of Spring!
Spring is in the air! Now’s the time to jump onto the Spring fever train with a Cup of Spring. This simple, exciting kid’s activity will have them springing with joy!
What you’ll need:
- Grass seed (or seeds of your choice)
- Potting soil
- A clear plastic container (we used the bottom half of old coke bottles)
- Items for decorating (foam shapes, wool, glue on trinkets, stickers)
- Stanley knife and scissors
- Nail and hammer (for making holes in your cup)
A great way to recycle your old coke bottles is to use them for fun kids activities.
To make your “cup”, use a Stanley knife to pierce a hole into the coke bottle half way down the bottle. Use this hole to start cutting with the scissors.
Cut around the diameter of the bottle to make your cup.
Use the nail and hammer to create 5 or 6 drainage holes in the bottom of your cup
Get the kids to exercise their creativity and let them decorate their cup with stickers, glued on trinkets or even wool.
Once they are happy with their creations, it’s time to add the potting soil.
Fill the cup ¾ of the way up with the soil.
Sprinkle the grass seeds on top of the soil and add a little water.
The seeds should take a week or two to sprout. Watch them grow! The reason that we like to use a clear cup is so the little ones can see the roots grow.
Once the grass has grown, you can give your Cup of Spring a haircut.
