The word Agapanthus is interestingly derived from the Greek words ‘agapѐ’ meaning love and anthos meaning flower. Agapanthus ‘Zambezi’ brings a whole new dimension to these ‘love flowers’ with their striking broad variegated leaves and violet flower heads.
Agapanthus enjoy full sun or semi shade where they should be planted in well drained soil .It is important to remember that low light areas can encourage reversion to green so growing Agapanthus ‘Zambezi’ in full sun will help retain the variegation in the plant.
Agapanthus’ Zambezi’ grows to approximately 40 cm in height and produces tall strong flower spikes above the foliage. These spikes hold a globular head bearing open faced violet flowers which appear through the summer months, generally from December to March. The best feature however is the broad strappy leather like dark green leaves which are streaked with a creamy yellow variegation and framed by a broad golden yellow margin. The strappy leaf gives a strong sense of design while the variegation means year round colour.
Regular deep watering especially during the summer will keep these plants happy however once established they are water wise specimens. For strong leaves and exceptional flowers be sure to feed with a good compost and organic fertilizer.
Agapanthus ‘Zambezi’ is evergreen and indigenous and will handle very light frost. They are good for coastal gardening and make excellent cut flowers.
The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is the extra and this unique Agapanthus provides just that extra compared to other varieties. Zambezi’s variegation adds spice to a garden as it draws your eye into the areas where it is planted. Small groupings make excellent focal points and the leaves work well at “lighten up” any bland section of a garden. They cope well in containers and make a bold statement when used with other complimentary plants in pots.
