New Zealand Rock Lily (Arthropodium cirratum)

Also known as the Renga Renga Lily

The New Zealand Rock lily is well known not only as a perfect shade plant but also as an excellent coastal plant when planted in the shade.

Arthropodium cirratum is a clump-forming, herbaceous, perennial lily. It has soft, lush, lime green, foliage which brings form and colour to any garden bed. The strap like leaves surround masses of delicate starry, white flowers which occur on a flower spike approximately 60cm in height.

The Lily white flowers appear in abundance in late spring and continue appearing into early summer. This is a wonderfully maintenance free plant. All it needs to be kept looking tidy is to have the prior seasons bottom leaves removed every few months.

Arthropodium lilies perform best in a fertile well-drained soil. They can tolerate being planted in the sun or partial shade. Their strongest attribute however is that they make ideal plants for a dry shade position.

Once planted, water well to encourage the plant to establish itself in the soil. This will then ensure it has the ability to tolerate any dry conditions throughout its natural life making it a water wise alternative for South African gardens.

Should your New Zealand Rock Lily require fertilizing this is best done in spring. Be sure to watch out for snails and slugs as they tend to be attracted to the lush leaves.

The rhizomes of the Renga Renga lily were vitally important to Maori culture where they were used as a food source and for their medicinal qualities. When cooking these rhizomes they used ‘hangi’, which is a traditional form of Maori cooking in an earth oven. It involved digging a pit in the ground and heating stones at the base of the pit with a large fire. They then placed large baskets of food on top of these stones. The pit was then once again filled with soil and left for several hours to cook before uncovering. It is said this lilies nourishing starchy tuber tastes much like potato.

Arthropodium cirratum lilies brighten up dull areas under trees and work well as a border plant to frame garden beds. Planting clumps of the Rock Lilies among other perennials ensures full garden beds with a cottage garden feel.
