Owning a home can be a big responsibility โ you have to pay the bills, buy the groceries, manage the household, and decorate, if you have time. Everything in the house definitely matters, but what about everything outside of the house? What about the driveway, the garden, the flower beds, and the lawn? Does that matter, too?
The answer to that question is absolutely. You want to have a neatly paved driveway, a prosperous garden, a delicately taken care of flower bed, and a gorgeous lawn that really makes your house pop.
But weโre going to focus on one aspect of the outside household today; weโre going to focus on the lawn. We will go over watering, lawn-edging, as explained in this guide, and mowing it properly, and on how to care for the grass, soil, and roots all together. Specifically speaking, weโre going to narrow in on beach house lawn care โ you know, lawn care tips that will help your beach lawn grow naturally and healthily during those summer months (and other months, if youโre living there year-round).
Without further ado, letโs get this show on the road.
Lawn Care Tip #1: Water the Right Way
If youโre going to keep up with watering your lawn, keep this little tip in mind: The grass only needs approximately one inch of water per week. However, if the temperatures are quickly rising, you might want to increase the watering to approximately two inches, then see how your lawn fares.
If youโre looking to keep track of the amount of water your lawn is getting during rainy seasons, grab a straight-sided can and place it outside where water can collect. Measure it daily and make sure youโre not giving it extra water that it may not need.
Two more things to keep in mind when watering your lawn the right way: The earlier you water, the better; donโt water the lawn in the evening. Lastly, if your lawn starts to dry out and become dormant, donโt try your hardest to water the grass back to life โ leave it be and let it heal. Itโll come back to you.
Lawn Care Tip #2: Mowing is Important
If youโre living at your beach house during the summer months, try your best to mow your lawn regularly. Always keep the mower blade a little bit higher than normal during the dry months, too. This will keep your grass healthy and it will prevent the clippings from suffocating your lawn.
The blades must be sharp, to ensure that the mower is actually cutting the grass, not tearing it to shreds.
Lawn Care Tip #3: Overfertilization is Not a Good Idea
Lawn professionals recommend that you do not fertilize close to summer โ at least not super close to those hot, humid months. Itโs best to fertilize thirty days or so before the summer temperatures start to kick in.
If you take a look at your lawn and start to see dry, brown patches show up, do not give into your temptation to drop more fertilizer on the grass; doing so will not help your grass grow. In fact, it will do the opposite, and likely burn out what healthy grass you do have surrounding those dry, brown patches.
Lawn Care Tip #4: Minimize Wear & Tear on Your Lawn
Itโs a known fact: If you donโt have pathways setup to point your guests and housemates in the right direction to your front or side door, they will start to make their own. That means that signs of wear and tear may start to show up on your lawn, so itโs probably a good idea to install steppingstones or walkways sooner rather than later.
Luckily, having such lawn additives will save your grass in the long run.
Lawn Care Tip #5: Control the Weeds
Weeds are pesky little suckers, but you need to keep an eye out for them all the time โ donโt get lazy on your lawn.
If your living at a beach house, odds are that youโre staying there during the summer and warm months (not the cold and dry months). This gives you the perfect opportunity to get rid of those weeds, because truth be told, summer is when the weeds will start growing and harvesting around your lovely grass.
Try your best to resist the urge to apply products to areas with weed infestations. Adding weed killing products may stress the lawn out even more, so if worse comes to worse, get down on your hands and knees and pull those weeds out one by one.
There are plenty of other lawn care tips that we could throw your way, but we did tell you that the essentials are what you needed to know this time around.
Study up on them, implement them so that your lawn can be as perfect as your heart desires, and youโll be on your way to a beautiful exterior household (then you can work on the inside!).
