A Very Merry DIY: Festive Ornaments for Your Tree

The holiday season is here, and it’s time for fun, festivities and lots of crafts.

Keep the kids busy and laughing with a little happy activity. It’s the season of cheer, after all, so add a little to your trees with this easy peasy bird seed ornament DIY. The kids will love getting their hands dirty, the trees will look peppy, the birds will chirp happily, and they make great festive gifts too. Let’s make it a December to remember.

What you will need:

  • 3/4 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 ½ tsp. unflavored gelatin
  • 3 tbsp. golden syrup
  • A whisk
  • 4 cups birdseed
  • Molds (muffin tin, cookie cutters, etc.)
  • Baking tray
  • Nonstick spray
  • Drinking straws
  • Waxed paper
  • Ribbon/twine

Let’s get creative:

  • First, get your little ones to mix the flour, water, gelatin and syrup together in a large mixing bowl - using the whisk to stir. Stir until was well-combined.
  • Add the birdseed to the mixture, and stir until completely coated.
  • Kiddies, put your gloves on now!
  • Place the wax paper on the baking tray and spray with nonstick spray. Spray the molds after.
  • Lay handfuls of the mixture on the wax paper, flattening them out and then placing the molds over each merry mound of mixture.
  • Poke a hole through top of each birdseed mold using drinking straws. Make sure the hole has gone through all the way, to make it easy for you to thread your ribbon or twine.
  • Leave them to dry while you get a good night’s sleep.
  • The next day, remove the straws.
  • Adults, we may need your skills here. Help your kids cut the ribbon and thread it through the hole. Tie knots in the ribbon so that the ornaments can hang on a tree.
  • It’s time to decorate! Hang up these festive ornaments in a tree and watch as the birds enjoy them.

December in the Garden

Do dream of a ‘green’ festive season, as your nearest GCA garden centre will have everything in stock to make your dreams a reality, with festive gifting ideas and foolproof plants to smarten up your yard.

Smart planting – Foolproof greenery

If the idea of planting lovely texture in all the shades of green like lime green, spring green, apple green, bright green, dark and olive green appeals to you, then pick from this list of delightful plants which are also top sellers:

Japanese sago palm (Cycas revoluta) is a very sculptural palm-like plant growing up to about 1,5m in height. It has dark green feathery leaves shaped in a wide rosette. Evergreen and suitable to full sun or shade, semi-hardy and requires medium to low water usage.

Bird of paradise (Strelitzia reginae) is a dense, clump-forming indigenous species with dark green, spear-shaped leaves on sturdy stems. Both the flowers (which appear from autumn and stay throughout the winter months) as well as the leaves are very popular with floral artists. Strelitzias prefer temperate to subtropical climates and have a very low water usage when properly established.

Cape box (Buxus microphylla ‘Faulkner’) is a tough, evergreen shrub. It is compact and upright growing, with a dense coat of oval-shaped, bright green leaves. It can be pruned into any topiary shape and is suitable as a hedging plant (and also as a small festive tree!). Cold hardy and frost resistant, requiring medium water use.

Lilyturf (Liriope muscari ‘Evergreen Giant’) has dark green leaves reaching nearly 1m long. This is a lovely accent plant for sun or deep shade, in pots and near the swimming pool. It is semi-hardy and has medium water usage requirements.

Dwarf mondo grass (Ophiopogon japonicus ‘Kyoto’) has dark green leaves and is a very compact size (10 x 30cm).

Festive Ideal for Indoors: Ravishing Festive Amaryllis Bulbs

Of all flowering bulbs, Amaryllis are amongst the easiest and most rewarding to grow and flower – whether indoors or out. Amaryllis bulbs produce incredibly showy, trumpet-shaped blooms that add a flamboyant and bold statement to gardens and homes throughout South Africa.

The Amaryllis’ flowering period extends from spring through to autumn; conveniently coinciding with the festive and holiday season. Poinsettias are the traditional holiday flower – but Amaryllis bulbs have to be close on their heels!

The wide range of spectacular double and single red blooms, make this plant a festive winner over the holidays. Potted plants can be used as décor items, but also make long-lasting and stunning gifts for festive gifts and year-end gifts of appreciation.

There are several good reasons why you should give Amaryllis bulbs a try:

Like with all bulbs, Amaryllis store all they need to ‘bloom’ in their enlarged bulb. All that’s required is for you to plant the bulb and add water – then sit back and enjoy! For instant beauty, visit your local GCA garden centre and purchase a potted amaryllis.

Whether indoors or out, their key requirements are drainage and a sunny location.

Mixed colours and varieties in abundance – choose from an endless range of mini, medium or large flowering blooms in an endless range of colours – including whites, pinks, orange, red and more.

Longevity… Amaryllis bulbs flower within 4–6 weeks of planting. Most plants will produce flowering stems, which easily extends the growing period to 6–8 weeks.

The true ‘BONUS’ with Amaryllis bulbs is that they grow for many years. Bulbs can be stored in a dark, dry cupboard and replanted next season, or if planted into the garden – the bulbs will naturally regrow and flower, provided they receive enough sun and are watered regularly enough.

Herewith a few useful tips when growing Amaryllis bulbs indoors:

Top heavy: Amaryllis blooms can be spectacularly large (and heavy).

Water Wise Watch: November

This month at Water Wise

"Weather variability or climate change?"
Gauteng has been experiencing a slightly strange weather phenomenon this summer season. Gone are the days of the regular and  predictable afternoon thunder showers that arrived in a frenzy and left just as quickly after a drenching downpour and lots of lightning and thunder. Climate change forecasters have predicted that South Africa is expected to experience an increase in extreme weather events, wetter wets, and drier drys. Our inconsistent weather lately, that of a day of severe storms and torrential rainfall, followed by days of no rain seems to indicate a pattern of weather variability not seen consistently in the past. Are we starting to experience the effects of climate change? Regardless, it is never too late to start being Water Wise!

Water Wise Tip of the Month:
With the sudden, extreme downpours we are experiencing lately, especially in Gauteng, it is a good idea to protect the soil from becoming compacted by strong, heavy rain drops. You can do this by covering it with a layer of organic mulch. Organic mulch such as dry leaves, bark chips, nut shells, and grass clippings will form a protective layer as well as add valuable nutrients into the soil as it decomposes.

Agapanthus praecox ‘Zambezi’

The word Agapanthus is interestingly derived from the Greek words ‘agapѐ’ meaning love and anthos meaning flower. Agapanthus ‘Zambezi’ brings a whole new dimension to these ‘love flowers’ with their striking broad variegated leaves and violet flower heads.

Agapanthus enjoy full sun or semi shade where they should be planted in well drained soil .It is important to remember that low light areas can encourage reversion to green so growing Agapanthus ‘Zambezi’  in full sun will help retain the variegation in the plant.

Agapanthus’ Zambezi’ grows to approximately 40 cm in height and produces tall strong flower spikes above the foliage. These spikes hold a globular head bearing open faced violet flowers which appear through the summer months, generally from December to March. The best feature however is the broad strappy leather like dark green leaves which are streaked with a creamy yellow variegation and framed by a broad golden yellow margin. The strappy leaf gives a strong sense of design while the variegation means year round colour.

Regular deep watering especially during the summer will keep these plants happy however once established they are water wise specimens. For strong leaves and exceptional flowers be sure to feed with a good compost and organic fertilizer.

Agapanthus ‘Zambezi’ is evergreen and indigenous and will handle very light frost. They are good for coastal gardening and make excellent cut flowers.

The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is the extra and this unique Agapanthus provides just that extra compared to other varieties. Zambezi’s variegation adds spice to a garden as it draws your eye into the areas where it is planted. Small groupings make excellent focal points and the leaves work well at “lighten up” any bland section of a garden. They cope well in containers and make a bold statement when used with other complimentary plants in pots.

New Zealand Rock Lily (Arthropodium cirratum)

Also known as the Renga Renga Lily

The New Zealand Rock lily is well known not only as a perfect shade plant but also as an excellent coastal plant when planted in the shade.

Arthropodium cirratum is a clump-forming, herbaceous, perennial lily. It has soft, lush, lime green, foliage which brings form and colour to any garden bed. The strap like leaves surround masses of delicate starry, white flowers which occur on a flower spike approximately 60cm in height.

The Lily white flowers appear in abundance in late spring and continue appearing into early summer. This is a wonderfully maintenance free plant. All it needs to be kept looking tidy is to have the prior seasons bottom leaves removed every few months.

Arthropodium lilies perform best in a fertile well-drained soil. They can tolerate being planted in the sun or partial shade. Their strongest attribute however is that they make ideal plants for a dry shade position.

Once planted, water well to encourage the plant to establish itself in the soil. This will then ensure it has the ability to tolerate any dry conditions throughout its natural life making it a water wise alternative for South African gardens.

Should your New Zealand Rock Lily require fertilizing this is best done in spring. Be sure to watch out for snails and slugs as they tend to be attracted to the lush leaves.

The rhizomes of the Renga Renga lily were vitally important to Maori culture where they were used as a food source and for their medicinal qualities. When cooking these rhizomes they used ‘hangi’, which is a traditional form of Maori cooking in an earth oven. It involved digging a pit in the ground and heating stones at the base of the pit with a large fire. They then placed large baskets of food on top of these stones.

Shasta Daisy (Leucanthemum ‘Daisy Mae’)

This exceptional daisy provides masses of extra large white blooms with large golden centres that create a wow factor in any garden. They have larger buds then other Leucanthemums, are easy specimens to grow and are most effective when planted en masse.

Leucanthemum ‘Daisy Mae’ has an upright and spreading growth habit. Their excellent branching habit and the fact that they produce many side buds means a fuller plant and more flowers. Give plants about 30 cm between each other to prevent overcrowding.

“Daisy Mae” is a perennial that has single flowers on sturdy stems from late spring to early autumn, an exceptionally long flowering period! Stems can reach between 30 and 50cm in height, depending on conditions. The rich green foliage contrasts well with the stark single white flowers. Because of the upright growth and strong stems ‘Daisy Mae’ is an excellent cut flower and makes for beautiful bouquets.

While dead heading is not a necessity it will improve the plant performance and appearance, to do this cut dying flower stems off to encourage new flowers later in the season. Butterflies are attracted to the flowers and this in turn will encourage birds and other wildlife to your garden.

Leucanthemum enjoy a full sun position where it performs best in well drained soil. Water well when required but be sure to allow the soil to dry out between waterings. They just love organic fertilisers and a good mulch.

This low maintenance plant is ideal for mass planting, borders and containers. Super for lightening up areas in the garden used for night time entertaining.

Water Parsnip is a vigorous, indigenous aquatic herb of the carrot family (Apiaceae) – other family members include, Cumin, Caraway and Fennel – noted for its medicinal use in relieving toothache among traditional healers. Water Parsnip’s beautiful bright green, sword fern-like foliage forms the perfect foil for other grassy textured water plants and for showing off their delicate umbels of white Queen Anne’s Lace-like flowers that make their appearance through late summer. Best grown in full sun to part shade in moist soil or shallow water no more than 20 cm deep. Evergreen in frost-free gardens, but will resprout from the roots if heavily frosted. Benefits from occasional cutting-back to tidy up clumps and control excessive spread.
